This practice – of looking for the space that surrounds seemingly fixed objects or ideas – strikingly illustrates how much more dynamic the relationship of one’s self to the world can be with awareness. Maybe that sounds elementary – but I find it easy to confuse drama with dynamism. When the object is replaced with its essence, then drama falls away – the tension between two outcomes – wanted and unwanted – and what remains is possibility. I have a new sense of the idea of refuge as both peaceful and exciting, calm and creative.
